In Australia, energy plans come with variable or fixed rates. When energy prices rise (as they are now, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland), you should consider switching to a supplier with a flat rate energy package.
Important: Since June 2022, there has been a lot of volatility in the energy market. It is possible that some of the suppliers compared below have recently suspended their fixed-price energy plans. We’ll do our best to keep this page up to date, but you’ll need to check the details of your new plans to be sure.
Below is a list of Australian energy providers that offer a flat rate energy package in each state. Energy prices can vary widely from state to state, so be sure to compare plans where you live.

Why are there no flat rate energy packages in Western Australia?
Energy plans in Western Australia work a little differently from the rest of the country. You won’t have a choice between the 2 providers, Synergy or Horizon – your address will determine which one you can go with. This means that there are no options for flat rate energy plans in WA.
Fixed price energy packages are products offered by energy retailers that lock in electricity and gas prices for a certain period, usually 1 or 2 years. If you have a fixed price energy plan, the price you pay per kilowatt hour for electricity and gas will be “fixed” for the duration of your contract.
Not all energy providers in Australia offer fixed packages. Here is the list of providers that currently offer flat rate plans across Australia:
Other providers may offer flat rate energy packages in some states.
What are the pros and cons of flat rate energy packages?
Advantages
- Price guarantee. The biggest advantage of a fixed price plan is that you will always know how much you will pay for gas and electricity for an agreed period of time.
- Can save you money. If retail energy prices increase during the term of your fixed rate contract, you will end up paying less for energy than if you had subscribed to a standard variable rate plan.
The inconvenients
- Blocking contract. Fixed rate energy plans are normally offered as 1 or 2 year contracts. If you decide to leave the plan early, you may have to pay a fee.
- May end up being more expensive. While you might save money over a variable plan if energy prices go up, so does the opposite direction. If energy prices go down during your contract, you could end up paying more for energy than someone on a variable rate energy plan.
The main difference between a fixed rate energy plan and a variable rate energy plan is that the price you pay for gas and electricity on a fixed rate plan does not change, whereas it may with a variable rate plan. Those looking for more certainty and price stability may prefer a fixed-tariff energy package, while those looking to take advantage of potential lower energy prices may prefer a variable-tariff package.
As with any other product, it’s best to compare a range of fixed rate and variable rate energy packages to find the best one for you.
